Let’s be honest… no one really enjoys the process of moving. The thought of having to figure out how to pack up and move your whole life can be intimidating, stressful, and exhausting. As much as you may want to just throw everything you see into some boxes and call it a day, there is a better way to pack that will save you time and stress in the long run. Use these tips to pack smart and give yourself a break…
Purge – Before packing anything, take a moment and go through the things you currently have and decide what you don’t need or don’t want to keep. The last thing you want to do is pay to move things that you don’t even want or need.
Do the Inessential First – Decide what areas of your home are used the least and start with those. Be sure to pack up any non-essential items first. Many times this may be a storage closet or extra room that is not often used. Do not start with the bathroom or a bedroom, since these areas are used everyday and you’ll want access to the items in them without having to dig through a box that you’ve already packed up.
Categories – Pack up items from each room together in their own boxes. Keeping them separated by categories and areas will help so much with the unpacking process. Be sure to pack all the bathroom items in the same boxes, all of your kitchen baking supplies, all of your plastic ware, etc.
Label – Labeling the boxes as you pack them is one of the most important steps! Label them with the category of items that are in the box and what room in your new home they will be put in. This will help the moving company to know where to place the boxes so they don’t just dump them all in one room, forcing you to have to open and go through each one to figure out where they should go.
Separate – If there are items or boxes that you plan on moving yourself, keep them separate so there is no confusion and they don’t get loaded up with all the others.
Communicate! – If you are using movers, be sure to communicate with them as much as possible. Let them know that all of the boxes are labeled accordingly, and they should be placed in the appropriate room. When everyone is on the same page it will save you all a lot of time and stress.
